Did you know that we have authored a series of articles to get you on the right path to learning how to install your own dashcam? This is the second of three articles in this "How-To Identify" Series. You can use the links below to continue to the other articles. Hardwiring your dashcam to your fuse box has its benefits: not only does it free up your 12v cigarette outlet, it hides distracting wires to improve your windshield visibility and makes your dashcam install look clean and professional.
If you have a BlackVue dashcamyou can utilize your parking mode feature without affecting the health of your battery with a Power Magic Pro or a direct wire harness. Need help finding your fuse box and figuring out which fuse type you have? What is the difference between a constant and switched fuse? Your vehicle uses electrical circuits, just like the ones in your home.
These circuits supply power to the electrical components located throughout your car, like your headlights, your radio, and your door locks.
In modern cars and trucks, there are generally two types of circuits that run through the vehicle: circuits that are live all the time and circuits that are only live when the engine is running. A circuit that is live or hot all the time means that it constantly receives power, even when your car is parked and the engine is turned off. Inside your fuse box, these constant and switched circuits tend to live right next to each other, with each circuit protected by an individual fuse.
Bummer, we know. The tool that you will need to test your fuses is a circuit testeralso known as a test light. This is a link to the exact tester that we use in this tutorial. Ready to find out which fuses in your fuse box are constant and which are switched?
Let's Get Started! Need help finding your fuse box? Using your circuit tester, connect the grounding clip to a bare metal point on the vehicle.
This is your ground point. The best ground point on a vehicle is usually the negative terminal on the car battery. To test, connect the ground clip to the negative terminal and the tip of the probe to the positive terminal.
One of these metal latches is typically close enough to the fuse box to work for you. When I plug my my USB phone charger in it, the light on the charger comes on to indicate it is being poweredbut it fails to charge my phone. I tried using the same charger in other cars and it works perfectly fine. I even used other chargers in my car, and they don't work either.
I'm a bit confused.Password hacking tools
Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be? I've not yet looked at the fuse box, as I presumed the fuse is okay since the light on the charger still comes on? My car is a Focus Zetecmodel. If its still the same then maybe your socket is worn and not getting a good enough contact to power the charger fully, the LED uses hardly anything. With the fuse removed, you can use a slightly abrasive cloth like a kitchen sponge or paper towel to clean the socket - I got all manner of crap out of mine I think the previous owner spilt coffee as when i removed the center console there was remains of it!
Oh okay, nice idea. I can try doing the above tomorrow morning. Will let you guys know how I get on. Thanks Stoney! That's very kind of you. But fortunately, I was able to sort it. The fuse was blown, and I just swapped it.
I can't explain how, despite it being blown, the LED light on my charger would still come on? Perhaps it only requires a minimum amount of power to do that. Thanks again for your suggestions though, guys.

The only way to fix it so that your cigarette lighter fuse stops blowing is to check each possible point of failure until you identify the issue. Depending on the nature of your problem, replacing the fuse with a higher amp version could damage the fuse box, melt wires, or even cause a fire. Car cigarette lighters are simple devices that have changed very little over the decades. The two basic components are a socket, which is connected to both power and ground, and a removable plastic or metal housing that contains a coiled metal strip.
In most cases, the inner wall of the socket is grounded, and a pin at the center is connected to a fused power source. Under normal circumstances, a cigarette lighter can be expected to draw roughly 10 amps, and cigarette lighter circuits usually have 10 or 15 amp fuses. This allows you to plug in phone chargers and other devices that draw less than 10 or 15 amps, depending on the fuse in your specific vehicle.
Both cigarette lighter sockets and dedicated volt accessory sockets can be used to power volt devices and power adapters. So if you have a volt accessory socket on a separate circuit that keeps popping fuses, the diagnostic procedure will be about the same. Cigarette lighter fuses, like all car fuses, blow when the circuit draws more amperage than the fuse is designed to handle.
If the cigarette lighter fuse is 15 amps, then a draw of more than 15 amps will cause it to blow.
If you replace it with another 15 amp fuse, and something on the circuit is still drawing more than 15 amps, then the fuse will just blow again. It may seem like the easiest solution would be to simply replace the 15 amp fuse with a larger fuse, but this is actually very dangerous.
And if the problem in your circuit is actually some type of short, putting in a larger fuse may cause the wiring to heat up to the point where it could melt or even cause a fire. While you can buy a circuit breaker as a direct replacement for the fuse that keeps blowing, this is also a bad idea, especially if there is a short in the circuit. These circuit breakers are useful in some applications and have certain diagnostic uses, but using one to intentionally overload a cigarette lighter circuit is not recommended.
Some vehicles have change holders, or catch-all trays, in the vicinity of the cigarette lighter socket, which makes it dangerously easy for a coin to fall in. If that happens, the coin may contact both the grounded barrel and the hot pin inside the socket and cause a short circuit. Other metal objects, like paperclips, or even pieces broken off from old phone chargers, can also become lodged in a cigarette lighter socket. Just to be safe, you should make sure that you remove the cigarette lighter fuse before reaching inside the socket to remove the foreign object.
You can then install a new fuse and check to see if it still blows. There is a hard limit on the current that you can draw from a cigarette lighter socket or any volt accessory socket. In most cases, cigarette lighter circuits use 15 amp fuses, but you can check the fuse box in your vehicle to be sure. Cell phone chargers are usually designed to work with cigarette lighter sockets without blowing a fuse, but other devices, like cigarette lighter inverterscan easily overload the circuit.
If the plug is broken, worn out, or has something stuck on it, plugging it in may cause a direct short between power and ground inside the cigarette lighter socket. Or you could also use an ohmmeter to check for an internal short in your adapter.David Hobbs helped make these videos.
Why Does My Cigarette Lighter Fuse Keep Blowing?
We are still working to obtain content for your car, however the video above is believed to have similar characteristics as your car. The video above shows how to replace blown fuses in the interior fuse box of your Ford Focus in addition to the fuse panel diagram location. Electrical components such as your map light, radio, heated seats, high beams, power windows all have fuses and if they suddenly stop working, chances are you have a fuse that has blown out. If your Focus is experiencing electrical problems, you should always check the fuses first, because they are relatively easy to check and cheap to change.
Some Fords have multiple interior fuse boxes including in the trunk - the video above will show you where the interior fuse box of your Focus is located. If your Focus has many options like a sunroof, navigation, heated seats, etc, the more fuses it has.

Some components may have multiple fuses, so make sure you check all of the fuses that are linked to the component in question. If you need to replace a blown fuse in your Focus, make sure you replace it with one that has the same amperage as the blown fuse. If checking and replacing the fuse for the component in question doesn't work, we recommend seeking assistance from a trusted professional mechanic.Ros2 tf2 python
They should be able to figure out if the component needs to be replaced or if there is a short or some other problem with your Focus. In my ford ka the cigarette lighter socket is always on, which means that when I turn off the engine I have to unplug the USB thingy I've got in there. It's a bit annoying and I'm constantly worried that I've forgotten to unplug it and I'll come back to a drained battery.Killer wifi kext
I know that the battery probably won't drain completely overnight but it's still annoying. How would I go about making it so that this port only turns on when the car is on? I have things constantly wired into it so I need it every time I drive but only when I drive.
Is it something to do with a fuse??? You can modify it to come on with the ignition but not without a little bit of re-wiring so it depends on how comfy you are with some basic electrical work. Essentially you need to wire a relay into the the 12V wire for the cigarette lighter and use something that is only live with ignition on as the trigger wire for the relay the "ACC" wire running to the radio is a good candidate.
While not particularly complicated electrics I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a DIY job to someone unfamiliar with electrical work in general - the upside is that any auto electrician should be able to do something like this for you in less than an hour. I believe this would need custom wiring to be switched on and off with the ignition. Your factory lighter socket is not wired to do this.
I do not like making modifications that change the factory wiring or can not be easily reversed, so this is my suggestion. Get a fuse tap. This will allow you to create a new circuit off an existing fuse. Use a switched, non essential circuit, like switched power for the radio. Run the fuse tap to a new 12v lighter socket.
The power wire runs to the center back or the lighter socket. You will need to run a ground to the case of the lighter socket.
Example of a fuse tap. New lighter socket.Ford focus 2005 cigarette lighter doesn't work
I'd look for a lighter socket like this with a bracket. You can use double sided tape think command strips to mount it so you are not making a permanent change. Alternately, you could run power from the new circuit to the existing lighter outlet. This may be more difficult to run the power wire through the dash. If you do this, remove the fuse for the current lighter circuit, so you do not have a live wire hanging behind your dash.
My only concern with this is if it is designed to work with the fast charge feature on your phone. Some of these are available in a kit with the fuse tap. Here is an example of one. Unless you are leaving something actually plugged in and charging all the time, the charger itself is probably only running a little LED which is negligable in the context of the parasitic load from other things in the car.
If you are leaving the car this long I would just unplug the device! Personal experience is that I have a phone charger with a little blue LED that is plugged in all the time in my car, and sometimes don't go anywhere for weeks at a time.
I don't notice any trouble starting it after this, even in the winter. It's also possible that your battery is getting old and weak -- you may want to look at a new battery if the car seems hard to start after sitting overnight. Depending on your manufacturer's recommended maximum amperage my Cadillac CTS supports up to 30 amps in the front panel shared across both sparesyou could use two Fuse Tap pigtails connected like properly crimped via the red cable, and divert power from the positive HOT SPARE to the negative Cigarette terminal, while inserting 2 total fuses into the top of each pigtail. For the cigarette lighter fuse on UK models Ford focus there is another 'hidden' fuse box behind the glove box.
Just unscrew three screws at the hinge of the glove box and bobs your uncle. Replace fuse 35 which is a 15amp fuse.

I just replaced this for a Ford Focus and sure enough it was behind the little storage compartment on the left hand side of the steering wheel. We store CD cases in it. I pinched the two side walls together and the door opened wide and exposed the fuse panel.
For this model it was Fuse 47 and it was for 20 amps. Replaced it and now things are working again.
